K6 Gul Grand Prix, Round 1 at Oxford SC.

Oxford SC hosted the first round of the 2012 Gul GP over the weekend of 14th and 15th April. The class used this first weekend to take the opportunity to run a training day in conjunction with the event. Saturday was spent on the shore with some theory followed by 2 sessions on the water focusing on boat handling and rig setting. The evening was spent in the de-brief room with a video and much feedback. The evening involved a superb fish and chip supper at the local gastro pub in true K6 fashion.

Sunday was race day and a crisp brisk North wind greeted the fleet. The race team at Oxford got 3 races away in superb fashion. Race one saw the team of Julian Cook, Caroline Aisher & Richy Leonard take an early lead only to overhauled downwind by Dave Hall & Grant Blake. Dave and Grant held the lead to take the first gun, Peter Kirkby and Richard Barker also managed to pass Julian’s team up wind in the very shifty and strong wind. A pattern was to emerge with the same three boats battling it out at the front of the fleet. Julian’s and Dave’s team fought it out in the next 2 races each changing places for the lead throughout both races. It was team Julian that managed to clinch the gun on each occasion with Peter and Richard following in third each time. With two firsts and a third it was enough for team Julian to win over team Dave with a first and two seconds.
