2014 K6 Open Aldeburgh Yacht Club

28th & 29th June 2014

It was a weekend of masterclasses for the K6's in Aldeburgh. We had: two sailing masterclasses provided by Ian and Sandy on the Saturday, and Lawrence with son Luka on the Sunday; a race management masterclass from brothers Stephen and Simon Fulford; a fire the fleet-up and make sure ALL the local boats are on the water from Nick Jones which involved a mandatory evening in the pub on the Friday; and a culinary masterclass from Lucy in the kitchen who's pulled pork rolls and chocolate brownies could build a reputation to challenge the famous fish and chips up the road.

Lawrence and Luka had a superb Sunday with 3 bullets, and they won overall on a count back from Ian and Sandy who had an equally superb Saturday. Lawrence and Luka almost didn't make the Sunday after an unfortunate coming together with Alex Cooper, but it's amazing what a big roll of duck tape can do! You didn't need a count back to tell the difference between the conditions on the two days.

Saturday was light and fickle and sailed down towards Orford where the river is wider and away from the moorings. Conversations carry in these conditions, and it was great to hear George Jones bemoaning the fact that the Queen no longer personally signs birthday cards for people turning 100 because there are too many living too long. Never let it be said the youth of today don't have standards!

Sunday promised the same conditions but grey clouds and a bit of rain brought some real bite to the breeze. Combine this with sailing in the narrower upper reaches of the river with plenty of moorings and a flood tide, and you had a recipe for the closest racing we've had in a long time and hoarse voices coming ashore.

The biggest spectacle of the day was provided by Pyers Tucker who managed to fall out of the boat while pulling an extreme bear-away to avoid being over the line on. With Pyers in the water holding onto the tiller extension and brother Bill trying to get him back in the boat, the bear-away continued and unfortunately ended with Alex Cooper being t-boned...rumours that Alex was considering renaming his boat 'give and take' remain just that... Net, a great weekend with intense racing...one that we'll be back for.
